I am a historian whose field of specialization is the period of both World Wars, in particular the history of Nazi Germany. I believe that teaching these subjects is as risky as it is necessary: the terrain is fraught with lies and half-truths. A good teacher should not be afraid to be provocative and inspiring, challenging students to take another look at their convictions, which, as Nietszche said, often are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies. In my classes I try and make clear that an unwillingness to do so points to a lack of integrity and is, in the end, self-defeating.
