1:00 PM Ceremony concludes
Ceremony: The ceremony includes a presidential address, an undergraduate and a graduate
student speaker, the awarding of honorary degrees to a number of distinguished individuals,
and the conferring of degrees and advanced certificates. All fourteen schools and colleges of
New York University participate. Because over 5,000 students are expected to attend, it is
impossible to recognize each individual by name. Instead, the deans will introduce each class
as a whole, and a representative selected in advance will receive a symbolic diploma for each
degree category.
Invitation Eligibility: Invitations are extended to all graduates and candidates for degrees and
certificates for the 2007-2008 academic year -- specifically for September 2007, January
2008 and May 2008. Candidates for May degrees must apply for graduation via Torchtone no
later than February 15, in order to receive an invitation. Exceptions may only be made in
consultation with the Dean or Student Affairs officer of each individual school or college. All
full-time faculty are also invited to participate in the academic procession and the ceremony.
Commencement invitations to participate in the ceremony will be mailed in late March. If you
do not receive this information by April 7, please contact the University Registrar, Student
Services Center, 25 W. 4th Street, 1st floor, to verify graduation status and mailing address.
Telephone: (212) 998-4260.
Diplomas: A diploma will be mailed to the graduate’s permanent address by the Office of the
University Registrar approximately eight weeks following the date of graduation. For further
information regarding diplomas, contact the Office of the University Registrar.
Academic Attire: Graduates and degree candidates who wish to participate are required to
wear academic attire and to march with members of the faculty, officers of the administration,
alumni, trustees, and honored guests in the academic procession. Rental information is
available on the Commencement web site at http://www.nyu.edu/commencement.
Guest Tickets: Participating students may request up to six guest tickets. Tickets are not
transferable and must be picked up in person by the student. Since there is no rehearsal,
detailed instructions regarding participation in the ceremony are included with the student’s
ticket.
Rain Plan: There is no rain date. Commencement will take place rain or shine. If rain is heavy,
the ceremony will be abbreviated. Participants should come prepared if inclement weather is
expected on Commencement Day.
Webcast: The 2008 Commencement is being broadcast live on the Web. Friends and family
who are not present at graduation can still join in the celebration. After Commencement, the
Webcast will be archived and available for viewing.
