| The Liberal Studies Program provides students with the advantages
of a liberal arts college within the larger academic community of New
York University. Our students become active learners through daily
contact with faculty in and out of the classroom. At the same time,
Liberal Studies students draw upon the unparalleled academic, social,
and locational resources of one of the world’s leading research
universities.
The hallmark of Liberal Studies is our commitment to small classes,
where faculty and students work together to forge a learning
community. Our faculty are, first and foremost, dedicated teachers.
Several have won the university's most prestigious teaching award.
Others have published award-winning books, and many have received
international recognition for their scholarly and creative
achievements. All work to incorporate in their classes New York’s
incomparable urban milieu and the unique settings of our international
sites.
Our two-year course of study emphasizes the Great Works, focusing on
the masterworks of Western and World cultures, ranging from Ancient
Greece, Rome, and China to contemporary Europe, U.S., Latin America,
Africa, and Asia. Our curriculum is writing-intensive and
interdisciplinary, embracing literature, history, philosophy, art,
architecture, and music. In the second year, students have increased
opportunities to take courses in their majors, in preparation for a
seamless transition to their four-year degree programs of choice.
As you navigate our web site, you will learn more about our curriculum,
our faculty, and our unique liberal arts environment. I feel confident
that what you discover will make you want to become part of our
community. However, if you have any questions or concerns, please do
not hesitate to contact us at lsdean@nyu.edu.
With all best wishes,
